Volunteers Needed for Girl Scout Fall Fest at Camp Cedar Point in Makanda

We have some exciting news! Fall Fest on Oct. 3 at Camp Cedar Point has reached maximum capacity, with 256 girls and 128 adults attending!

Due to increased capacity, we need additional volunteers. We could use help with set up (8:30-11:30 a.m.), registration (11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.), running stations such as face painting, games, handing out guides for hikes, one match fire station, archery, crafts and more (11 a.m. -5 p.m.), and, of course, clean up (4-7 p.m. unless we get everything cleaned up super-fast!).

If you can help in any way, shape or form, please let Program Manager Anne ‘Cupquake’ Townsend know at atownsend@gsofsi.org. Thanks!

Four Generations of Girl Scouting at Camp Cedar Point

"My grandmother, Daphna Robinson, was the West Frankfort Service Unit director in the 1960's. She was also my mothers Girl Scout leader.

I have a photo of my grandmother and other leaders attending Camp Cedar Point, standing in front of Bruce Lodge in 1965. Exactly 30 years later, my mother, Susan Elliott, who was my Girl Scout leader, took our troop to Camp Cedar Point and we had our picture made in front of Bruce Lodge.  Now, 18 years from then, I am my daughter's Girl Scout leader and took my daughter to Camp Cedar Point for the first time this year and had our picture taken standing in front of Bruce Lodge.

Four generations of Girl Scouts and three generations of Girl Scout leaders standing in the same spot at Camp Cedar Point!

My grandmother and my mother were both AWESOME Girl Scout leaders! I still have old classmates that were in my mother's troop who tell me stories about her and the times we had being in her troop. She made it so much fun, but we always learned a lot as well! She was more like a second mother to the girls in my troop, rather than just a leader. Now she is my co-leader of my daughters troop. It allows us to spend so much quality time together. I wish my grandmother was still with us to be able to help in my daughters troop as well. But through pictures I can still share the stories with my daughter!

Many of my aunts and cousins have also been leaders, so Girl Scouting runs deep in our family. Hopefully my daughter will continue the tradition with her children as well some day! "

Jacqueline Watkins, West Frankfort

Nearly 400 Girl Scouts Attend Resident Camp

GSSI's Camp Cedar Point in Makanda hosted 389 Girl Scouts for resident camp this summer.  The length of programs ranged from a Camper for a Day event for girls in kindergarten to third grade to an eleven day arts-themed session for teens complete with field trips to regional museums and theaters.

There were 28 different programs, each with a different theme.  Girls could explore science, technology, engineering and math at sessions such as Candy Chemistry and CSI.   Girls tried out their outdoor skills at programs like Girl Vs. Wild and Adventure Bound.  Young chefs cooked up fun at programs like Cast-Iron Chef and Extreme Desserts and dreamers let their imaginations run wild at programs such as Happy at Hogwarts and Pirates of Little Grassy.   There were even sessions where camp came alive after dark, such as Moonlight Magic and Night Owl.

"Camping is a valuable part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience," said Director of Program Angie Suhre.  "Girls get to try new things and meet new people.  They learn new skills while developing self confidence and responsibility."

To ensure that every girl has the opportunity to attend Resident Camp if she desires, GSSI provided more than $30,000 in camp scholarships.

To learn more about GSSI's Resident Camp at Camp Cedar Point in Makanda, please contact Angie Suhre at 800.345.6858, ext. 1112 or e-mail asuhre@gsofsi.org.
