Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois Receives $72,000 Imagine Your STEM Future Grant from Girl Scouts of the USA and AT&T

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) has received a $72,000 grant from Girl Scouts of the USA and AT&T to advance Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) for 200 girls in 10th-12th grades in the Collinsville School District. The grant is part of a partnership between GSUSA and AT&T through a program called Imagine Your STEM Future.

Imagine girls in careers that foster creativity, action, a good income, and opportunities to change the world for the better. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills can get girls there! As a long-time supporter of Girl Scouts, AT&T’s Imagine Your STEM Future is a four-part series designed to increase girls’ interest in STEM careers and inspire them to become leaders through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

“We are thrilled to receive this Imagine Your STEM Future grant from GSUSA and AT&T,” said Micah Bolandis, Director of Mission Delivery. “Today’s girls need programming that will introduce them to a variety of career options in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. GSSI has an extensive STEM program that allows girls to participate in a variety of STEM initiatives like programming robots, building bridges, candy chemistry and STEM Explosion Day Camp. In fact, more than 1,728 girls participated in a STEM program in the past year,” Bolandis added.

Through the Imagine Your STEM Future grant, Girl Scouts and AT&T have united to advance underserved high school girls in science and engineering. As minority students and women are gravitating away from science and engineering toward other professions, and employment in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields are increasing at a faster pace than in non-STEM fields, educational experts say the U.S. must increase proficiency and interest in these areas to compete in the global economy. Today, Girl Scouts of the USA and AT&T are addressing this issue with a $1 million AT&T Aspire contribution to spark interest in STEM in underserved high school girls across the country.

Experts say the country's need for a world-leading STEM workforce will continue to grow. Recent research from the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce predicts 2.8 million STEM job openings as of 2018, including 1.2 million net new jobs and an additional 1.6 million replacement openings.

“Girl Scouts has a long history of encouraging girls to participate in STEM. The first STEM badges – the electrician badge and the flyer badge – were introduced in 1913. GSSI’s goal is to build and reinforce girls’ interest in STEM, to support their continued involvement as they reach critical decision-making points and to achieve parity in these fields,” Bolandis said.

Heather Barclay of Thompsonville Honored as GSSI's April Pearl of the Month

 

 

 

Heather Barclay of Thompsonville has been named GSSI’s April Pearl of the Month. The Pearl of the Month Award recognizes a Girl Scout volunteer who has delivered service beyond expectations and helped to ensure that the approximately 14,000 Girl Scouts in southern Illinois benefit from a premier Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Nominees must meet several criteria, including completion of all required training for his or her volunteer position as well as providing outstanding service to his or her Service Unit or the Council.

 Heather has been a volunteer for seven years since her daughter started as a Daisy. She has continued to take on more responsibility becoming a co-leader. Heather is always working to come up with new ideas to help the girls earn badges.

She is also the Cookie Chair and Fall Product Manager for the troop. Despite personal and family commitments, she never misses a meeting and already has plans to keep the girls engaged over the summer.

 

 

 

GSSI Donates Girl Scout Cookies to American Red Cross Greater St. Louis Region

The American Red Cross Greater St. Louis Region is pleased to accept a donation of more than 4,500 boxes of Girl Scout cookies that will be distributed to Red Cross clients affected by disasters in Southern Illinois.

The Gift of Caring program allows Girl Scout customers who do not want cookies for themselves or have a limited need to give to others while supporting Girl Scouting.

Throughout the Greater St. Louis Region, Red Cross volunteers respond to small and large disasters, including an average of three house fires per day. They provide displaced residents with basic emergency needs such as a safe and warm place to stay, provisions for food and clothing, and emotional support. Volunteers will distribute the cookies to Red Cross clients in Southern Illinois in the coming months.

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois Elects Board of Directors

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) held its 5th Annual Meeting on April 5 at the Hilton Garden Inn in O’Fallon.  During the meeting, approximately 300 Girl Scout members (adults and girls) from throughout southern Illinois elected Board of Director members and received a “State of the Council” report from Dixie Travelstead, GSSI Board of Director Chair; Jay Strobel, GSSI Chief Communications Officer and Micah Bolandis, GSSI Director of Mission Delivery.

Along with the Officers, Directors-at-Large and Board Development Committee Members that were elected at the Annual Meeting, GSSI named the two girls that were selected to serve as Girl Ex-Officio Board Members.  Helena M. Frisbie-Firsching from Dorsey and Lydia Fulton from Worden will serve as Girl Members on GSSI’s Board of Directors

In addition, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois recognized top Girl Scout volunteers which are the heart of Girl Scouting.    GSSI’s 4,800 Girl Scout volunteers play an instrumental role in providing leadership programming and opportunities for more than 14,000 girls in southern Illinois.  The theme for this year’s GSSI 5^th Annual Meeting was I Can’t Wait To which is part of a national Girl Scout campaign launched to highlight the fun, excitement and anticipation girls feel when they join or participate in Girl Scouting. 

“Girl Scouting in southern Illinois would not be what it is today without the dedication, passion and leadership of all of our volunteers,” said Appoo.  “We are honored to elect these new Board Members and recognize our exceptional volunteers as they are the driving force behind carrying out GSSI’s mission of building leaders for America.  Working together with our volunteers, we are providing important and valuable programs and experience for girls who will make the world a better place for everyone,” Appoo added.

On April 12, GSSI teams from O’Fallon, Troy and Germantown participated in the St. Louis Regional Botball Tournament at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.  While GSSI teams did not place in competition, the O’Fallon squad did receive the “Team Spirit” and “Spirit in the Face of Adversity” Judges’ Choice awards.

Addison Liefer Presented with GSUSA Medal of Honor

Addison Liefer from Red Bud received Girl Scouts of the USA’s Medal of Honor at Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois' All That Glitters ceremony on April 5 at Hilton Garden Inn's Regency Conference Center in O'Fallon.  The prestigious lifesaving award was granted to her by the national Girl Scout organization for her lifesaving actions during a house fire this summer.  Upon discovering the car in her grandmother’s garage was in flames, Addison, age 9, immediately informed her grandmother of the emergency and then moved her 2-year old sister and 5-month old brother to safety.

The fire spread rapidly on the windy day, quickly reaching the gas tanks of the two cars in the garage, which exploded suddenly.  Because the house was in a rural area of Red Bud, it took firefighters some time to arrive and since there was not access to a fire hydrant nearby, they had to return to town several times for more water.  Ultimately, the house could not be saved, but everyone inside was unharmed thanks to Addison’s quick actions.

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois will present Addison with the Medal of Honor at their All That Glitters awards ceremony on April 5 at Hilton Garden Inn’s Regency Conference Center in O’Fallon. 

Lifesaving Awards have been a part of the Girl Scout program since the movement started in 1912.  Lifesaving awards are a form of recognition given to a registered Girl Scout who has saved or attempted to save a human life under circumstances that indicate heroism or risk of her own life.  These awards are reserved for those Girl scouts who have performed heroic acts beyond the degree of maturity and training expected at their age.

Dalaney Plott and Shelby Wratchford Named GSSI's 2014 Outstanding Graduating Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) is pleased to announce that Dalaney Plott from Anna, Illinois and Shelby Wratchford from Fults, Illinois have been selected as its 2014 Outstanding Graduating Girl Scout Scholarship winners.  The girls were recognized April 5 at GSSI’s annual All That Glitters Ceremony at the Hilton Garden Inn in O’Fallon.    In addition to earning this prestigious award, each girl receives a $500 scholarship for the college or university she will attend this fall. 

Dalaney is the daughter of Juanita and Billie Plott from Anna.  She is a member of Troop #8542 and has been a Girl Scout for 13 years.  She has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest award for girls in Girl Scouting and recognizes leadership, effort, and impact that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors have on their community.  Only about 6% of Girl Scouts earn the Gold Award.  Currently, Dalaney attends Anna-Jonesboro Community High School and plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University upon graduation where she will pursue a bachelors degree in History. 

“Girl Scouting is an extraordinary way of life,” said Plott.  “Girl Scouts provided me with incredible opportunities to discover more about myself, establish leadership skills, and give back to my community.”  As part of her Girl Scout community service, Dalaney helped plan and implement a Homework Pals Tutoring Program in 2013 which helps younger students with their homework by providing them a high school tutor.  

  

Shelby is the daughter of Jamie and Phillip Wratchford from Fults and has been a Girl Scout for 13 years.  She currently attends University of Missouri “MU High” and wants to attend college to pursue a degree in Art Conservation.  Shelby earned her Girl Scout Bronze Award in 2007 and is currently working on her Girl Scout Gold Award. 

“The most memorable part of Girl Scouting has been the opportunity to travel both domestically and internationally,” Wratchford said.  “I attended a Camporee in Wisconsin and most recently spent 10 amazing days in Paris, France as part of the Girl Scout’s Destination Program.”  Shelby added that she has also learned leadership skills in Girl Scouting and believes the best leaders lead by example with kindness, patience and sincerity.

“We are so pleased to honor Dalaney and Shelby with our Outstanding Graduating Girl Scouts Scholarship,” said Villie M. Appoo, GSSI Chief Executive Officer.  “Both of these exceptional young women have done amazing things in their Girl Scout journey and have been very active in providing community service to people in their communities.  They both are great examples of Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois’ mission of Building Leaders for America,” Appoo added. 

The Outstanding Graduating Girl Scout Scholarships are funded from proceeds from the annual Brownie Haunted Camp, which is planned, organized and conducted by Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois older Girl Scouts.   The Outstanding Graduating Girl Scout Scholarships are a great example of girls working together to make the world a better place.
