the Governor's Hometown Award committee.

Katharine Housewright from Saint Jacob
Girl Scout Gold Award Project: "Beautification of Triad Middle School Courtyard"

For her Girl Scout Gold Award, Katharine made improvements to the school courtyard which was built in the 1960's and had not seen many updates. She started by painting a map of the United States and the Preamble to the Constitution in vivid colors and updated bike racks with colorful, protective enamel. She researched and used paints that would last close to a decade for a more lasting impact. Katherine encouraged others to act alongside her by sharing her progress on social media and sending out press releases to local newspapers.

Troop #8893 from Marion
Girl Scout Silver Award Project: "Carnival for Lighthouse Shelter"

For their Girl Scout Silver Award, Troop 8893 hosted a fall festival carnival for younger children to support the Lighthouse Shelter in Marion, Illinois. The Lighthouse Shelter is a homeless shelter in Marion. During the spring of 2017, the Lighthouse Shelter suffered from flooding. The Girl Scout Troop #8893 had attendees to the festival brought items to donate to the Lighthouse Shelter.

Victoria Birchem from O'FallonGirl Scout Gold Award Project: "Nomenclature for Nature"

For her Girl Scout Gold Award, Victoria worked with the O'Fallon Garden Club, its president and board, to create a catalog/database of the community garden’s plants and species. After the new plant species labels were installed, Victoria helped coordinate public garden tours and organized a program for local Girl Scout troops to tour and learn more about the O'Fallon Community Garden. These updates provided the O’Fallon Community Garden with new learning opportunities for the community and visitors to the garden.

Girl Scout Troop #8018 from Royalton and GSofSI Director of Communications Kim Vrooman

Troop #8018 from Royalton
Girl Scout Silver Award Project: "Royalton Community Garden"

Jacquelyn and Cera were approached by Royalton Mayor, Christy Powers, to start a project that the youth in their community could take part in. For their Girl Scout Silver Award, Jacquelyn and Cera enlisted local youth and planned, planted, and maintained a community garden. After long hours of maintenance and harvesting, the youth of the community sold the produce to the people of Royalton. The proceeds from the produce sales were then given back to the town.

Mackenzie Keiser from Edwardsville
Girl Scout Gold Award project: "Growing With the Garden"
For her Girl Scout Gold Award, Makenzie helped teach area children how to grow vegetable gardens with the YMCA Early Childhood Development Center in Edwardsville. After working with staff to design and build three raised bed gardens at the facility’s children’s playground, she taught students about the importance of vegetables and how they are cultivated. Makenzie helped the students start growing seeds indoors and how to transplant them to the garden. Finally she assisted the children with harvesting and tasting their produce.

100+ Girls Turn in Final Reports to Earn Girl Scout Awards

GSSI is in the middle of a Gold (Silver & Bronze) Rush! More than 100 girls have turned in final reports to earn the highest awards in Girl Scouting!

Due to the influx of final reports this October, processing may take slightly more time than usual - thank you for your patience.  For more information about Girl Scout Awards, please visit our website or contact Awards Program Manager Julie Fox at 800.345.6858, ext. 1119 or e-mail jfox@gsofsi.org.

More About Girl Scout Awards:

The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, recognizes the leadership, effort, and impact girls in grade 9-12 have had on their communities. Only about five per cent of eligible girls take the rigorous path toward earning this prestigious award, but those who complete the journey change the lives of others and their own in amazing and significant ways.  The Girl Scout Gold Award tradition will turn 100 in 2016.

A Gold Award project is something that a girl can be passionate about—in thought, deed, and action. The project is something that fulfills a need within a girl's community, creates change, and hopefully, is something that becomes ongoing. The project is more than a good service project—it encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills.

Girls typically spend a minimum 80 hours working on their projects, after the completion of two Girl Scout Journeys and project approval. Girl Scout Gold Award recipients do well in life! They rate their general success in life significantly higher and report higher success in reaching their goals within many areas.

The Girl Scout Silver Award was introduced in 1980 and is the highest award girls in grades 6-8 can earn. It is symbolic of accomplishments in Girl Scouting and community activities, as a girl becomes her best self and builds the world around her. The Girl Scout Silver Award represents a girl's accomplishments in Girl Scouting and her community as she grows and works to improve her life and the lives of others.

Girls typically spend a minimum 60 hours working on their projects, after the completion of a Girl Scout Journey and project approval.

The Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout in grades 4-5 can earn, was created by a troop of Girl Scout Juniors from an individual council and introduced in 2001. It requires a Girl Scout Junior to learn the leadership and planning skills necessary to follow through on a project that makes a positive impact on her community. Working towards this award demonstrates her commitment to helping others, improving her community and the world, and becoming the best she can be.

Girls typically spend a minimum 20 hours working on their projects, after the completion of a Girl Scout Journey and project approval.

Granite City Troop #371 Sending Girl Scout Cookies to U.S. Military Overseas

A growing fondness for community service inspired Granite City Girl Scout Troop #371 to show some love to U.S. military members stationed overseas in the form of Girl Scout Cookies.   The troop is currently selling cookies and accepting donations to send the sweet treats overseas through the help of the local VFW Ladies Auxiliary and USO in St. Louis.   They call their campaign “A Little Love From Home.”

The troop of Girl Scout Cadettes has been working on earning their Girl Scout Silver Award – the highest honor that Girl Scouts in 6-8th grade can earn.   Earning the Girl Scout Silver Award requires a minimum of 60 hours of community service to a project that addresses a need in girls’ communities.   The troop chose to dedicate their efforts to Good Samaritan House, which provides temporary housing to homeless women and children.   They are currently working to help replace the flooring and furniture in the living area of the shelter, as well as volunteering to coordinate children’s activities.  Their positive experience led them to want to take on another service campaign.

“We were talking about Memorial Day and what it was about, that soldiers had given their lives,” said Troop Leader Lynette Melton Wolfe.  “The girls wanted to send something from home to soldiers to remind them that people here in the United States are thinking of them no matter where they are.   The girls decided to go with the theme ‘A Little Love From Home’ with Girl Scout Cookies representing the love from home.”

To help turn their idea into reality, the troop connected with the Granite City VFW Ladies Auxiliary, who are gathering personal goods for service men and women overseas, which the USO is shipping.   They are also campaigning around town to collect donations and spread awareness.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program helps girls learn valuable personal and professional skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, business ethics and people skills.   Money raised through cookie sales helps troops finance trips, programs and special activities.  Yet, many use their earnings to fund service projects in their communities, as well.

“Most of our girls are not from a mountain of wealth,” said Wolfe, “so to be working to earn money and giving it away is a big commitment for them.  But they’re seeing where it’s going.  They love to do things for other people.”

“I’ve always had a need to take care of other people and do things for other people.  I have a bit of that service personality,” she added.  “Girl Scouts, in my position, is leading by example - trying to see things and teach what service can do and what the potential of it can be.”

Wolfe appreciates how she has seen the girls grow through their years in Girl Scouts.  “You see the girls expanding themselves- trying things they’ve never tried before, getting opportunities, learning.  Girl Scouting is getting girls a little bit out of their comfort zones because you don’t know what you like until you’re there.”

To help support Troop #371’s “A Little Love From Home” campaign or their Girl Scout Silver Award project to renovate the living area of the Good Samaritan Home, please contact Lynette Melton-Wolfe at 618.980.0273 or e-mail lynettemeltonwolfe@gmail.com.

Checks can be made out to “Girl Scouts Troop #371” and mailed to 2nd Baptist Church, 2100 Illinois Avenue, Granite City, IL 62034 with ATTN: Cookies for Soldiers.

Troop #371 also welcomes any opportunities to speak to organizations or groups, as well as to set up a cookie booth at area businesses.
