2016 Fall Membership Blitz!

From finding the courage to raise her hand to rappeling down a cliff, Girl Scouts provides a safe place for girls to take chances and try new things, which will help her succeed in school, her career, and life. In fact, in a recent survey, 78% of girls said they were more willing to face their fears and take on new experiences. Supportive adult mentors help provide Girl Scouts with the tools they need to do more!

If you haven’t registered for the 2016-17 Girl Scout year yet - now’s the time! All girls and adults who register between Oct. 3 and Dec. 15 will be entered into a drawing for a $20 gift card to GSSI’s Council Shop (if you registered previously - there were incentives for those respective time period, as well). There will be three drawings held on Oct. 31, Nov. 30 and Dec. 20.

Camp Cedar Point Retirement Ceremony Update

The Planning Committee for the Camp Cedar Point Retirement Ceremony held its first meeting on June 20. The group decided to move the date of the ceremony up one day to Sept. 24, 2016.  The ceremony will follow the Fall Fest program being held at camp that day.

The CCP Retirement Ceremony Planning Committee is still open for new members.  The next meeting is scheduled for July 11, 2016 and can take place by phone conference. Please contact Angie Suhre at asuhre@gsofsi.org if you would like to join the committee.

Fall Fest Program Manager Anne Townsend is also looking for volunteers for Fall Fest 2016.  Please let her know if you're interested by e-mailing atownsend@gsofsi.org.

Volunteers Needed for Girl Scout Fall Fest at Camp Cedar Point in Makanda

We have some exciting news! Fall Fest on Oct. 3 at Camp Cedar Point has reached maximum capacity, with 256 girls and 128 adults attending!

Due to increased capacity, we need additional volunteers. We could use help with set up (8:30-11:30 a.m.), registration (11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.), running stations such as face painting, games, handing out guides for hikes, one match fire station, archery, crafts and more (11 a.m. -5 p.m.), and, of course, clean up (4-7 p.m. unless we get everything cleaned up super-fast!).

If you can help in any way, shape or form, please let Program Manager Anne ‘Cupquake’ Townsend know at atownsend@gsofsi.org. Thanks!

Plan a Girl Scout Day Camp for Summer '16 in Your Area!

WOW!
Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois already has 18 Day Camps scheduled for 2016.  The most ever...thanks to all of our wonderful day camp volunteers who are committed to providing girls a fun and safe camp and outdoor experience.

Where
Belleville, Charleston, Collinsville, Columbia/Dupo, East St. Louis, Effingham (2), Edwardsville, Granite City, Greenville, Highland, Massac County, O'Fallon, Staunton, UPAC, Waterloo.

In addition, we have two staff run STEAM day camps that will be held at Camp Torqua.

It's Not Too Late
We would love to expand our volunteer day camps so more girls can experience the fun of camp and outdoors.  But to do this, we need the committment of a Day Camp Director to make it happen.  Day Camp directors must commit to two meetings with a GSSI staff member prior to camp, run camp (either day camp or twilight camp), follow GSSI rules and guidelines, and meet one time after camp to just talk about how things went.  Volunteers from their area would also be needed to meet girl/adult ratios.  GSSI Program Managers Carolyn Miener and Emily Stanley will help make it easy and fun for Day Cmap directors and volunteers.  We would like to have day camps here:

Crawford County area
Jefferson County area
Lawrence County area
Marion County area
Randolph County area
Richland County area
Shawnee SU area
Wayne/Hamilton/White County area

Volunteers Needed for Robotics Tournaments

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois needs volunteers that are interested in helping at high energy, exciting robotics tournaments -  no robotics experience is necessary.
At the Southern Illinois First Lego League Qualifying Tournaments, volunteers are needed as robot game field resetters, referees, judges and to help with team check in and guiding them to the judging locations. This is your opportunity to see first-hand why there is so much excitement about First Lego League Robotics. The tournaments will be held on Saturday, November 22 at Amelia Carriel Junior High in O’Fallon and Saturday, December 6 at Carriel Junior High in O’Fallon and Albert Cassen Elementary school in Glen Carbon.
Please contact Mary Buchanan at mbuchanan@gsofsi.org for more information.
