Resident Camp 2016 Breaking News!

Exciting news! GSSI will be collaborating with Touch of Nature in Makanda and Camp Ondessonk in Ozark to offer Girl Scout Resident Camp in Summer 2016! We also are in negotiation with a third potential collaborator. Stay tuned for more information about these resident camp and outdoor experience opportunities to come!

Volunteers Needed for Girl Scout Fall Fest at Camp Cedar Point in Makanda

We have some exciting news! Fall Fest on Oct. 3 at Camp Cedar Point has reached maximum capacity, with 256 girls and 128 adults attending!

Due to increased capacity, we need additional volunteers. We could use help with set up (8:30-11:30 a.m.), registration (11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.), running stations such as face painting, games, handing out guides for hikes, one match fire station, archery, crafts and more (11 a.m. -5 p.m.), and, of course, clean up (4-7 p.m. unless we get everything cleaned up super-fast!).

If you can help in any way, shape or form, please let Program Manager Anne ‘Cupquake’ Townsend know at atownsend@gsofsi.org. Thanks!

First Girl Scout Product Program? Try These Daisy Financial Literacy Games & Activities

GSSI's 2015 Nut, Candy & Magazine Program kicks off Sept. 26. Not only does the program help girls raise funds for troop activities, it also helps them gain hands-on practice with five skills linked to leadership and financial literacy: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

Do you have a Daisy daughter or lead a troop of the youngest Girl Scouts?  Great!  Learning financial literacy at a young age is a lesson that will last a lifetime.  Try the fun games and activities below!

For more information about GSSI's Nut, Candy & Magazine Program, please contact Director of Product Program Kelly Jansen at 800.345.6858, ext. 2104 or e-mail kjansen@gsofsi.org.  Have fun!  To find financial literacy games for Brownies and Juniors, visit our website!
Daisy Financial Literacy Games and Activities
Fulfills Money Counts steps 1, 2, 3:

Money Money

You need: Place Value Boards (one for each girl), bags of copied money (one for each girl), Daisy Catalog pages, Daisy Program book pages.

Pass out the Place Value Board (place value side up) one per girl. Pass out the bags of copied money, one to each girl.

Ask the girls not to take the money out of the bag yet.

Ask the girls, “How many of you have an allowance?” You may have to explain what an allowance is. Ask the girls, “What do you spend your allowance on?”

Have the girls look at their Place Value Board. Ask them to read what the first column says. ($10.00). Point to the next column and have the girls shout out what that says, and so on to the last column.

Have the girls open their bag and pull out a nickel. Ask the girls, “What is a nickel worth?” Five cents. Have the girls open their bag and remove a penny. Ask the girls, “What is a penny worth?” One cent.

Tell the girls to pull from their bag enough pennies to equal a nickel and place it on their value board.

Now have them put their money back in the bag.

Challenge them to do different amounts, like: $1.32, $1.06, $50.10.

Be sure to include dollar amounts where there are no dimes, or no dollars. Have the girls suggest amounts to try.

Pass out the catalogs. Ask each girl to pick something they would like to buy for themselves. How much does it cost?

Set the amount of the item out on your Place Value Board. Have them pick an item they would give as a gift. How much does that cost?

Make a list of Girl Scout programs or trips the girls may be interested in, along with costs. Ask the girls to pick activities that they think sound like fun. How much does it cost? Set the amount of money the program costs on the Place Value Board.

Follow up: What are some things you like to do? Do they cost money or are they free?

Paying the Price

You need: play money and change for each girl, place value card for each girl, and small items with cost on them

Hold up the first prop, a lollipop that costs .05. Ask the girls to put .05 on their boards. Don’t give them any other directions. See what they come up with – most will either put five pennies or one nickel out. Some will put both. Point out how there are two ways to make five cents. If the girls only have one, have them try to make another.

Hold up the rest of the items, one at a time. Have the girls make their boards up to reflect as many ways as possible to make the cost of the item.

Dollar Digit

You need: Dimes and Pennies Game board (one copy per girl), Pencils (one per girl), bag of copied pennies and dimes (one per group), two normal dice (two dice per group)

Organize your group into smaller groups of 2-4 girls each. Pass out copies of the Dimes and Pennies Game boards to every girl and a bag of the pennies and dimes to every group. Each group also gets two dice and every girl gets a pencil.

Explain the rules:

1. Each player takes a turn rolling the dice.

2. Each player chooses if she wants to match the number on the dice with pennies or with dimes. For example, the first player rolls a one and a five. That makes six, right? How many pennies is that? (six) Can you use a dime? (No)

3. After the player puts her money on the coin board, she passes the dice to the next player.

4. Everyone rolls seven turns.

5. Your goal is to get as close to $1.00. How many pennies are in $1.00? (100) How many dimes? (10)

6. After seven rolls, count how much you have on your coin board and see what the rest of your group has.

7. Who has the most? Who has the least? Who is closest to $1.00?

GORP

Play this game as a group for Daisies, since it can be a little confusing! Double check your allergies and substitute as needed. The original game calls for banana chips, apricots, raisins and walnuts. If you have girls with tree nut allergies, pull walnuts and put in cranberries (check the processing label of all the food you buy to make sure there are no references to tree nuts or peanuts). If you have girls allergic to sulfites, pull the apricots. Other suggestions are sunflower seeds, chocolate chips or M&Ms.

Edit your game sheets to reflect your ingredients and copy for each girl.

You will need: Inflatable Dice (three), bags of pennies and dimes, and the coin board again to help the girls with the final cost analysis.

Read the description to the girls:

A camping store makes trail mix from these ingredients (list your ingredients). We have 10 ounces of each ingredient, which is why it says 10 on your sheet. Each bag of trail mix has three ingredients. We will take turns throwing the giant dice to figure out how many ounces of each ingredient go in the bags. We are going to try not to have any leftovers, though – the camping store has to sell all their ingredients to make money!

Choose three girls. Give each a die. Assign each girl an ingredient. Ask the rest of the girls to do a drumroll on their tables or desks before the girls throw their die. Have the girls throw their die and read their number.

Have all the girls write on their sheet the numbers. Ask the girls to write down the number on the line next to the roll number. Then ask them to subtract the rolled number from the 10 they started with. You may need to demonstrate with your fingers. For example, a girl assigned Walnuts rolls a 6. 10 minus 6 is 4. We have 4 ounces left of walnuts.

Choose three more girls and repeat, making sure you do the subtraction out loud with the girls every time.

After three rounds, ask the girls how many of each ingredient they have left.

Let’s pretend we run the camping store and for every leftover ounce of ingredient we lose .05. For every bag of trail mix we sell, we earn $3.00. How many bags of trail mix did we sell? How many leftover ounces do we have?

Use the coin board to figure out how much money we lose and how much money we make. Put five cents for every ounce in the pennies column. How many cents did we lose total? How many dollars did we make? (You made three bags so thee bags at three dollars each is 3 plus 3 plus 3). Subtract the cents we lost from the money we made. This will require a little help from you – nine minus whatever your total loss is – you may need to prompt them.

Line up your edible ingredients. Put two spoons in each ingredient. Give each girl a bag and let her add however many spoonfuls of each ingredient into her bag for a snack.

Lynette Melton-Wolfe Named GSSI's Pearl of the Month for September

GSSI is pleased to announce Lynette Melton-Wolfe of Granite City is the September Pearl of the Month.

The Pearl of the Month Award recognizes a Girl Scout volunteer who has delivered service beyond expectations and helped to ensure that approximately 14,000 Girl Scouts in southern Illinois benefit from a premier Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Nominees must meet several criteria, including completion of all required training for his or her volunteer position as well as providing outstanding service to his or her Service Unit or the Council.

Lynette planned and carried out the first ever twilight Day Camp for Service Unit 102 this year. It was attended by 70 campers and 11 PA/CITs. The girls learned cake decorating, kitchen chemistry and dinner party basics as well as games including life-size Candyland and Cracker Jack Jenga. Lynette was careful to plan activities that tied to badges and she even created a book for each camper including pictures so they would have a keepsake. The week ended with an overnight of 25 girls. She also recruited volunteers to help, made a patch, and stayed for cleanup! The real measure of success was the hugs she received from girls and both girls and adults asking to come back next year.

GSSI Receives "Thank You" from U.S. Servicewoman in Africa For Girl Scout Cookies

This U.S. Servicewoman in Africa has sent a very special "thank you" for the Girl Scout Cookies donated from southern Illinois through our partner Mission of Moms. We appreciate everyone who supported our Gift of Caring campaign during the 2015 Girl Scout Cookie Program and helped make these happy moments possible!

GSSI was able to donate 620 cases of Girl Scout Cookies to Mission to Moms, a nonprofit in Collinsville with the mission of "supporting our deployed military."

Another 500 cases were donated to Soldier's Angels, a large-scale nonprofit that "provides aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, their families, and a growing veteran population."

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters during the 2015 Girl Scout Cookie Program, 1120 total cases of Girl Scout Cookies were donated to U.S. Troops around the globe.

Plan a Girl Scout Day Camp for Summer '16 in Your Area!

WOW!
Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois already has 18 Day Camps scheduled for 2016.  The most ever...thanks to all of our wonderful day camp volunteers who are committed to providing girls a fun and safe camp and outdoor experience.

Where
Belleville, Charleston, Collinsville, Columbia/Dupo, East St. Louis, Effingham (2), Edwardsville, Granite City, Greenville, Highland, Massac County, O'Fallon, Staunton, UPAC, Waterloo.

In addition, we have two staff run STEAM day camps that will be held at Camp Torqua.

It's Not Too Late
We would love to expand our volunteer day camps so more girls can experience the fun of camp and outdoors.  But to do this, we need the committment of a Day Camp Director to make it happen.  Day Camp directors must commit to two meetings with a GSSI staff member prior to camp, run camp (either day camp or twilight camp), follow GSSI rules and guidelines, and meet one time after camp to just talk about how things went.  Volunteers from their area would also be needed to meet girl/adult ratios.  GSSI Program Managers Carolyn Miener and Emily Stanley will help make it easy and fun for Day Cmap directors and volunteers.  We would like to have day camps here:

Crawford County area
Jefferson County area
Lawrence County area
Marion County area
Randolph County area
Richland County area
Shawnee SU area
Wayne/Hamilton/White County area

For More Information:
Carolyn Miener: 618.307.3641 or cmiener@gsofsi.org
Emily Stanley: 618.307.3611 or estanley@gsofsi.org

Sarah's Girl Scout Gold Award Blog: Grand Opening!

My main event, the Exceptional Learner’s Library grand opening, went underway on Friday, August 28! This week was definitely the most important for me!  I am so relieved it went off without a hitch. Well, for the most part at least. There was only one minor hiccup: the fish. On the day of the opening, the tank had an overnight growth of algae and all the fish were huddling toward the bottom where there was more oxygen. Good news though, Karlene found a bottle of tank cleaner and they will be just fine.

So on the Wednesday before the grand opening, my parents and I hauled all the bookshelves, books, toys, and other supplies up stairs and into the car. Trying to fit everything into place was like playing Tetris in the trunk of a minivan. Any extra supplies we couldn’t fit in the van was stuffed into Karlene’s car. I was so excited that the project was finally happening! On Thursday after school, I rushed home to meet Karlene, my friend Vicky, and my family so we could hit the road. We took two cars. Karlene and I drove to the fish store to get guppies and supplies, and then we all went to Hazelwood Central Middle School in St. Louis to unload our cargo. Once we arrived at the school, we unloaded the books and shelves onto rolling carts and hauled them to the elevator and then to Cindy’s classroom. The bookshelves were put into place first followed by the fish tank. Karlene set up the tank and I decorated it. While the water was being filtered in, Vicky and I worked on shelving the books while my mom and dad stitched little bunny hand puppets together and took tags off of the toys. I sorted them into four different drawers and arranged them on the shelves.

Once everything was shelved and the fish were settled into their new home, I rolled out the carpets, arranged the pillows, and plugged in the lava lamps. The space looked amazing! After the actual library was set up, I tied it off with a red ribbon for the ribbon cutting ceremony the following day. The only thing left to do was set up the rolling library. For that I stacked my crates on a rolling cart and decorated the outside with multicolored streamers and foam stickers. Everyone else took a pizza break, but I was so excited that I forgot to eat. It was almost done! For the finishing touches, I hung the banner my sister had made several weeks prior above the bookshelves and decorated the space around it with little foam stars. After the last star was stuck into place, relief swept through me. All of that time working on every little detail had come together in a marvelous way. All of that hard work was worth something. I couldn’t wait to share it!

The next day, Vicky and I rushed home from school to get ready for the grand opening. I was so nervous! My aunt and uncle had come all the way down from Chicago to support me. As soon as I walked in the door, we all had to rush back out again. Karlene met us at Hazelwood and helped us set up some refreshments in Cindy’s classroom. I tried to prep myself while the Superintendent of the Hazelwood school district, the Superintendent of Special Education, the special education teachers, and the exceptional learners themselves filed in. As I got a chance to meet and talk with the kids, I relaxed completely. They were so friendly and very easy to talk to. I absolutely loved conversing with them. I showed them to their seats in the front row and the ceremony was ready to begin.

Cindy kicked off the event by introducing herself, me, and Karlene. She explained how I came across the project and how I managed to pull everything off (with help from friends, off course). Then, I selected one of the children to help me cut the ribbon. The library was officially open! Cindy asked the kids if they wanted me read a story to them, and it was a unanimous yes! I picked up “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose” from the shelf and began to read. As I read and showed them the pictures, the kids smiled and giggled with delight. It was silly and whimsical and they thoroughly enjoyed it! As soon as it ended, the kids rushed up to look at the other books and toys on the shelves. Their faces lit up when they found the sensory toys. One little boy kept rolling a flour-filled balloon between his hands. I presented my Girl Scout Gold Award plaque to both Superintendents and everyone enjoyed cookies and punch. All the kids enjoyed played games while I talked with the teachers and staff. The ceremony was a huge success!

I’m so glad everything went better than I had hoped for! It was an absolutely amazing experience and I have no regrets about it at all. Even though the main part of my project is over, there is still more to do. I won’t need to build another bookshelf (thank goodness), but I’ll need to complete my scrapbook and present it to Council. I hope that part will be smooth sailing. Time to get crafty again!
