Angie Zahn: Dedicated Girl Scout Volunteer and Gold Award Advisor – 29 Years and Counting!

Since 1916, Girl Scouts have been making meaningful, sustainable change in their communities and around the world through their Girl Scout Gold Award projects. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. As the Girl Scout Gold Award celebrates 100 years of girls changing the world, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) is highlighting some of our shining stars who exemplify the greatness of this award.

Angie Zahn

A great part of the success of many organizations relies heavily on the quality and dedication of volunteers who are passionate about the organization they are serving. This is true about Girl Scouts as an organization, and this is true about Angie Zahn as a long-time Girl Scout volunteer.
Angie Zahn from Trenton, IL is a Managing Broker with Strano & Associates Real Estate. Even with her busy career, Angie has found time to pour her heart and soul into Girl Scouting. Being a Girl Scout Troop Leader for 29 years is quite an accomplishment in itself, but it doesn’t stop there for this volunteer. Angie has worn (and still wears) many hats with Girl Scouts, ranging from Day Camp staff to Board of Directors Chair. One of the roles that Angie has held for several years, and still holds today, is that of Girl Scout Gold Award advisor and mentor.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a girl can earn in Girl Scouting. To earn this award, a Girl Scout Senior or Girl Scout Ambassador must design and carry out a project that fulfills a need within her community, creates change and is sustainable. The project must be completed with a suggested minimum of 80 hours of work, and only about 5 percent of eligible girls earn the prestigious Gold Award. To say that a girl’s Gold Award Advisor is instrumental in her journey would be an understatement.

Angie began her adventure as a Girl Scout Gold Award Advisor by first mentoring her daughter through her Gold Award project. Angie’s daughter, Jennifer, developed a summer reading program for kids in their hometown of Trenton. Jennifer arranged for speakers, door prizes and activities for the kids at the library all summer. Angie went on to mentor another 6 girls through their Gold Award projects, including Sarah Monical who is now Angie’s Troop Co-Leader. She hasn’t stopped there; Angie is currently working with her eighth Girl Scout who is going for Gold.

“At the end of the day, we talk a great deal about how the Girl Scout Gold Award project was designed to benefit others. What I have seen time after time is truly the benefit to the girls. The payback for our girls comes from finding out they are capable of making a difference, that they are capable of making decisions that affect themselves and others, and that they have it within themselves to succeed,” said Angie of the Girl Scouts she has mentored.

As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scout Gold Award, Angie encourages other adults to consider becoming a Girl Scout volunteer and Gold Award advisor. She states, “There is nothing more satisfying than watching a young woman recognize her own power and realize her dreams.”

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois Volunteer Angie Zahn Named "Volunteer of the Week" By Serve Illinois

GSSI volunteer Angie Zahn has been named "Volunteer of the Week" by Serve Illinois, the Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.

Go to Serve Illinois or read article below:

Angie is truly an amazing volunteer who gives so much to the Girl Scouts and our mission of building leaders for America… girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.
- Jay Strobel
Angie Zahn is a Managing Broker by profession but a Girl Scout at heart. Currently, she serves on Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois’ (GSSI) Board of Directors as Secretary.  Angie previously served as president of the Girl Scouts of River Bluffs Council (legacy council to GSSI).  She has been a Girl Scout volunteer and mentor for 29 years. Not only has Angie served on the Board of Directors for many years, she also served as a National Delegate to Girl Scouts of the USA. She has also been a troop leader, a cookie chair, Property Task Force member among many other volunteer activities.
If there is a need, Angie is always one of the first to volunteer and say, “I can do that!”  Angie is a great supporter of camp, outdoor experience, and programs like Haunted Camp Torqua. Her most important role in GSSI is her work with older girls, and mentoring these girls while they are working on their Girl Scout Gold Award.  To date Angie has mentored 7 girls to receive the Girl Scout Gold Award, Girl Scouts’ highest individual award.  As a Girl Scout volunteer Angie always strives to ensure all girls benefit from the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.  She gives her time, her talent, and her money to ensure that Girl Scouting is a place where girls gain the courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place for all of us.

Karlene Hoefener of O'Fallon Named September Pearl of the Month

Karlene Hoefener of O’Fallon is the September Pearl of the Month. The Pearl of the Month Award recognizes a Girl Scout volunteer who has delivered service beyond expectations and helped to ensure that the approximately 14,000 Girl Scouts in southern Illinois benefit from a premier Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Nominees must meet several criteria, including completion of all required training for his or her volunteer position as well as providing outstanding service to his or her Service Unit or the Council.

Even though her own daughters are grown, Karlene continues to mentor Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts and has helped numerous girls earn their Gold Award. She has also coordinated Product Sale Programs for her Service Unit for many years and provides great communication for volunteers and girls to make sure the program is a success. More recently, she has also moved into the Day Camp Director position and secured volunteers for programs, crafts, and every detail while continuing to recruit future volunteers. Karlene is always willing to help and she demonstrated that quality earlier this year when she agreed to help with an outreach program at Fulton Junior High and volunteered to help process registrations at the council office during an employee’s unexpected medical leave. Like many other volunteers, she devotes much of her personal life to Girl Scouting.

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois Elects Board of Directors

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) held its 5th Annual Meeting on April 5 at the Hilton Garden Inn in O’Fallon.  During the meeting, approximately 300 Girl Scout members (adults and girls) from throughout southern Illinois elected Board of Director members and received a “State of the Council” report from Dixie Travelstead, GSSI Board of Director Chair; Jay Strobel, GSSI Chief Communications Officer and Micah Bolandis, GSSI Director of Mission Delivery.

Along with the Officers, Directors-at-Large and Board Development Committee Members that were elected at the Annual Meeting, GSSI named the two girls that were selected to serve as Girl Ex-Officio Board Members.  Helena M. Frisbie-Firsching from Dorsey and Lydia Fulton from Worden will serve as Girl Members on GSSI’s Board of Directors

In addition, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois recognized top Girl Scout volunteers which are the heart of Girl Scouting.    GSSI’s 4,800 Girl Scout volunteers play an instrumental role in providing leadership programming and opportunities for more than 14,000 girls in southern Illinois.  The theme for this year’s GSSI 5th Annual Meeting was I Can’t Wait To which is part of a national Girl Scout campaign launched to highlight the fun, excitement and anticipation girls feel when they join or participate in Girl Scouting.

“Girl Scouting in southern Illinois would not be what it is today without the dedication, passion and leadership of all of our volunteers,” said Appoo.  “We are honored to elect these new Board Members and recognize our exceptional volunteers as they are the driving force behind carrying out GSSI’s mission of building leaders for America.  Working together with our volunteers, we are providing important and valuable programs and experience for girls who will make the world a better place for everyone,” Appoo added.

Girl Scout Cookies Help Daisy Save the Day

Check out this happy story from Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois Volunteer Yumi Hernandez-Hohm:

"We just got done selling cookies and I heard a loud screech.  This dog just avoided getting hit by a car!!! Sylvia and I worked at trying to get to the dog who would keep running back in the street! AHHH!! Finally, I went to my boxes of cookies and was trying to find a non-chocolate cookie (chocolate kills dogs). I yanked out a Do-Si-Do and threw the cookie at the dog. She stopped and ate the pieces of cookies while (Girl Scout Daisy) Sylvia and I got to her and rescued her! Luckily she had a tag with an address on it. Her name is Pearl! Sylvia was sooo happy to have helped save this dog. The owner bought two boxes of Thin Mints!"

Amber is the co-Service Unit Director representing the SU 66 – Shawnee, which serves Saline, Gallatin and Hardin Counties.  She has gone above and beyond what is expected to recruit new leaders in the community, filling every open position in the Service Unit.  Also, Amber made sure that every new leader had a co-leader to help them.  Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Girl Scout organization, so Amber’s role in recruiting new leaders and readily assisting current volunteers fills a vital need.
The mission of Girl Scouting states:  Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.   Girl Scouts is the world's pre-eminent organization dedicated solely to girls - all girls - where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world.  In partnership with committed adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives - like strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.
Today’s Girl Scouts not only enjoy camping and crafts, but they also explore math and science and learn about diversity, good citizenship, leadership and teamwork.  Girl Scouting is the place where girls experience the fun, friendship and power of girls together. Girl Scouting has inspired more than 50 million girls and women since its founding in 1912.

Ask Membership: Is There a Volunteer Recruitment Program?

Dear Membership,
My troop LOVES the Girls Guiding Girls to Girl Scouts (4G’s) recruitment program! They are so good at getting other girls to join Girl Scouts that we have had to form a new Girl Scout troop for our program level. While forming the new troop I recruited new Girl Scout leaders. Is there any type of 4G’s program for adults? –Love Bringing Girls and Adults to Girl Scouts

Dear Love Bringing Girls and Adults to Girl Scouts,
Thank you to you and your girls for helping to bring the Girl Scout program to more girls! The Membership Department recognizes that many leaders are recruiting new leaders so we created a program similar to 4G’s just for you. The Legacy Leaders Leading a Legacy (4L’s) is a way to reward registered adult Girl Scout volunteers who recruit at least one adult who is not currently registered as a Girl Scout for 2013-2014 membership year.

The 4L’s perks for the recruiter include the following:
• Free t-shirt for the recruiter (one per recruiter).
• The proud feeling of sharing Girl Scouting with other girls in your community.
• Entry into a drawing for a special prize.
The 4L’s form must be filled out  and the newly recruited volunteer must register using the 4L’s registration form by December 15, 2013 in order to participate in the program.  Additional forms can be found online and/or obtained from your Membership Development Manager. Please contact your MDM with any questions. -Membership

First Lady Michelle Obama supports Girl Scouts

First Lady Michelle Obama discusses the important role played by Girl Scout volunteers in a new video released on Sept. 29 by Girl Scouts of the USA, for which she serves as Honorary National President. Every First Lady of the United States has served in this post since  1917, when First Lady Edith B. Wilson became the first Honorary National President. Mrs.  Obama’s video coincides with the launch of the organization’s new national campaign to  increase recruitment of girl members and adult volunteers while highlighting the fun, excitement, and anticipation that are part of the Girl Scout experience.

The campaign captures the fun of Girl Scouting with the theme “I can’t wait to…” and girl-friendly grassroots promotions that will reach every community nationwide. With 3.2 million Girl Scouts and 112 Girl Scout councils across the country, parents, caregivers, and volunteers are vital to the organization’s success.

“Girl Scout volunteers can be moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents, or anyone else looking to help girls in their community fulfill their boundless promise,” said First Lady Michelle Obama. “As a Girl Scout volunteer, you can show girls that anything is possible, and you can inspire them to dream bigger and go further than they ever even imagined.”

Girl Scouts is dedicating the week of September 30–October 7 to getting the word out to adults who care about girls in their communities and want to make a difference. As Girl Scout volunteers, they can help girls make friends, have new adventures, and do great things.

“This campaign brings Girl Scouting to life by highlighting everything our Movement can offer girls, and connecting our mission and values to their interests, energy, and excitement in a way that both girls and adults find engaging and fun,” said Anna Maria Chávez, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA. “We are thrilled that our Honorary National President and First Lady of the United  States Michelle Obama has leant her remarkable voice and unique vision to this campaign, helping us reach and recruit more girls and adult volunteers across the nation and around the world. Her enthusiasm for our Movement is helping us shape the next generation of female leaders.”
